Soylent Green is a science fiction film that takes place in the future where the greenhouse effect is strong and food is incredibly hard to come by. While the film's depictions of the "future" are very unrealistic, and the plot isn't very easy to follow, the film does a good job of depicting a world without food. In this world, the majority of the population can't afford food, much less cook it. They eat artificial "crud" that can hardly be classified as food. Only the rich are wealthy enough to afford fruits and vegetables, sometimes even meat. During a case, our main character takes some food back to his house.

He and his roommate eat the food like it's a feast, crying tears of joy from eating mere leaves of lettuce. We see no real instances of "cooking" in this film, or much preparation of any kind. This really shows just how desperate people in this world are for food, that they don't even try to create anything with the ingredients. His roommate is an older folk, he remembers the days where food was sold everywhere and everyone could enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables. In this film, the food represents high class and wealthiness, only the rich can enjoy good food, whereas everyone else gets the scraps, literally. By the end of the film, we find out that soylent green, the "healthy" food bars the population receives, is actually made out of human corpses, thus the reason it has any real nutrition.
