Tortilla Soup (2001)Yu-Wen Wang, Chien-Lien Wu, and Kuei-Mei Yang in Yin shi nan nu (1994)The film Tortilla Soup is a remake of the movie Eat Drink Man Woman, and while both films are pretty much the same in terms of plot, there are some differences as well. For one, the ethnicity of the characters is different in each film Taiwanese for the original, and Latino for the remake. Regardless of their origins though,  both films feature a family of four, three daughters and a father. The daughters all want to get out of their father's house and live their own lives, while their father wants to provide for them, and wants them to take his advice. Elizabeth Peña, Tamara Mello, and Jacqueline Obradors in Tortilla Soup (2001)They both start off similarly, the father is cooking a meal for them while the daughters are all coming home and finishing up what they're doing. However, in Eat Drink Man Woman, the film portrays the daughters as acting way more negatively in this scene than in Tortilla Soup, the daughters act as if coming home to dinner is like torture. There's also another scene at the end that differs quite a bit with the two films. At the end of Tortilla Soup, the father proposes to the younger girl rather than the old lady, as a way for him to continue providing for a family again, as his daughters no longer need him. This is praised by everyone at the table and the older lady is surprised but stable.
Ah-Lei Gua, Chao-jung Chen, Sylvia Chang, and Sihung Lung in Yin shi nan nu (1994)In the original, however, when the father proposes to the younger lady it's a completely different reaction. Many folks at the table act as if he's committing some kind of sin, and the older lady curses out the family and even falls to the floor. Either way, both films represent food as a means for connecting with one another, they typically represent family bonds. As the father losing his sense of taste reflects his ability to support his daughters.
